President, PM, opposition chief sacrificing cows

Top politicians including the prime minister have made their own plans to sacrifice Eid-ul-Azha cattle on Monday like millions of other Bangladeshis.

President Zillur Rahman will sacrifice a cow like earlier years in Bangabhaban while prime minister Sheikh Hasina will make the sacrifice in three places and opposition leader Khaleda Zia in her Gulshan residence.

A senior leader of the ruling coalition's Jatiya Party told bdnews24.com seven cows would be sacrificed in party chief H M Ershad's Rangpur residence. The former president is in Saudi Arabia now performing hajj.

President Zillur Rahman's press secretary AKM Nesar Uddin Bhuiyan told bdnews24.com that the president will sacrifice a cow.

"Like previous years he will distribute the meat among the Bangabhaban staff."

Hasina will sacrifice cattle on behalf of her family in three places, a highly placed source at Ganabhaban confirmed bdnews24.com . The sites, according to the source, are Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at capital's Dhanmondhi 32, her Tungipara paternal house and her official residence Ganabhaban.

Khaleda's press secretary Maruf Kamal Khan told bdnews24.com the opposition leader would sacrifice a cow in the name of her family members.

"She will make the sacrifice at her Gulshan residence."

During the Eid, animals are slaughtered as a reminder of the Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael to God as an act of obedience and submission.

A portion of the meat is then distributed to the poor along with other charitable donations, as per Islamic tradition.
