Two cobblers from Keraniganj will turn into butchers for the next two days.
Search for eking out a living has brought 'Cheena' from Madaripur, Keraniganj to Dhaka's Shahidnagar where he works in a shoe store, and taken his brother 'Bhutta' to Moulavibazar.
But on Sunday, the eve of Eid-ul-Azha, they are both in Dhaka with teams of men. For the next two days, they are both professional butchers.
The sacrificial rite of Eid-ul-Azha, commemorating Prophet Ibrahim's sacrifice of his son, brings thousands of cattle to the capital every year. Along with them come hordes of butchers from across the country.
"Each team slaughters and dresses at least 15 cows on the first two days of Eid. The money is good. It's better than my job," Bhutta told bdnews24.com.
"I've worked on Eid-ul-Azha for 10 years," he said.
Jahangir Matbar, a businessman from Kamrangirchar, told bdnews24.com that butcher Farid would be coming in from Faridpur on Eid day to slaughter his cow.
"He comes to this area every Eid and dresses at least 20 animals."
These 'guest butchers' are a welcome sight to those making sacrifices on Eid, as the professionals who work the year round in Dhaka's butcher shops are in high demand.
"Babul', Nur Islam and Misir Ali are three such men. Their shop is in the Madbarbazar of Kamrangirchar.
"With a five-man team, we can chop up a large cow into pieces in two hours," Nur Islam confidently said.
He said he hoped to pocket at least Tk 50,000 in the next two days.
Over the years, Nur Islam's service has got costlier.
"I have sacrificed cows for the last 40 years, but never had to take so much pain over finding a butcher," said Azad Ali, a resident of Keraniganj.
Many old residents of the city avoid this problem by making a regular arrangement. "Each year, butcher Kalam and his four-man team dresses my cow," said Anisur Rahman, who has lived in Mirpur for 20 years.
Usually there is a verbal agreement on how much a butcher charges on the Eid day. Last year the rate was 10 percent of the cattle's price.
"But they've become more expensive. That rate won't work anymore," Anisur said.
