BREAKING NEWSDeal signed with Russia to build N-power plant

Bangladesh has signed a cooperation deal with Russia for the country's first nuclear power plant to be set up at Pabna's Rooppur.

State minister for science, information and communication technology Yeafesh Osman said Wednesday that the agreement envisaged building a 2000 MW nuclear plant with two reactors.

He announced the decision at a press briefing at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novo Theatre in Dhaka.

The state minister said in March that the plant shall be built to withstand 10-magnitude earthquakes.

On Feb 24, Bangladesh signed a framework agreement with Russia for setting up the power plant at Pabna's Rooppur, following parliament's approval on Dec 9 last year.

The state minister told bdnews24.com on Jan 8 that the work on the plant was expected to start by 2012.
