Pakistan openers menacing in chasing lead

Abu Dhabi, (bdnews24.com/Reuters) - Openers Mohammad Hafeez and Taufeeq Umar remained unbeaten at lunch as Pakistan edged closer to Sri Lanka's first innings total of 197 in the first Test on Wednesday.

Resuming at the overnight score of 27 for no loss, right-hander Hafeez (73 not out) and left-hander Umar (35 not out) batted through the morning session and took Pakistan to 115 for no loss at lunch, to trail by 82 runs.

Hafeez was the more aggressive of the duo and hit eight boundaries and a six, while Umar was more content in defending and hit a single four during his 107-ball stay at the crease.

The three Lankan pacemen failed to extract much zip and bounce off the slow track at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium and left-arm spinner Rangana Herath was the only bowler who managed to trouble the openers on a few occasions.

Pakistan are forced to play all their home Tests in the Emirates because of security fears in their own country.
